This is quite a precious example of how a ruin can be incorporated into a newbuild and the artistry involved can be said to provide a new twist to an ancient practice. Total demolition and newbuild is a peculiarly recent assumption of norm, century's wise. Which century? 18th, 19th, 20th? When did this attitude take hold? The world is full of examples of buildings that have been added to and adapted using the original buildings as starting points. Michelham Priory in Sussex, for example. And the untrained eye can't see the joins necessarily. I salute this effort, but please don't challenge the outer limits of how much difference between old and new you can stretch to - daringly, for ooh-ah effect - before the elastic snaps. It will always be obvious this is what is being done - as it is here.
