Public Building Architect of the Year

The winner turned in an impressive body of work including the refurbishment of the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank, and the planetarium and centre for modern astronomy at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.

The judges said it was clear that public buildings remain at the heart of Allies & Morrison’s work, and that the projects demonstrated “consistency”.

They said: “It is a very sophisticated body of work which shows a huge range, from a visitors’ centre and footbridge for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Welney, near Ely, to King’s Cross St Pancras Underground station, which serves 55,000 people a day.”

Also shortlisted: Arts Team, Building Design Partnership, Gareth Hoskins Architects and Grimshaw.
