Swooping structures in Beijing complete

Zaha Hadid Architects has completed the Galaxy Soho in Beijing.

The project is an ensemble of four buildings which pull apart and connect via bridges and plateaus.

The structure covers 330,000sq m across 18 floors, three below ground and includes retail units and office space.

Hadid said: “The design responds to the varied contextual relationships and dynamic conditions of Beijing. We have created a variety of public spaces that directly engage with the city; reinterpreting the traditional urban fabric and contemporary living patterns into a seamless urban landscape inspired by nature.

“The natural rhythms and flows of the city, of the environment and of the people have been integrated within the design to define its formal composition.”

  • It's dated already! Soulless architecture as product/fashion design. Next whimsically wilful trend please.

  • Isn't this City Hall (London) re-invented in concrete?

  • Is the reality of the finished building so bad that Zahaha will only release these cheesy CIG images? And what a flakey materialistic madhouse she presents. Empty and demolished within a decade???

Soundtrack says 'blandscape'. Are we meant to think anything else?

Concur with the point by @Keith Hodson: Why CGIs, when you've sent Iwan Baan to photograph it?

  • Hadid's not exactly known for responding to site context.

It's a simple formula: A fluid building (which probably doesn't even answer the brief), some parametric shapes plucked from the computer, get some snazzy CGIs done, stamp Zaha's name on it, competition won.
