Hand and machine carved Portland Stone blocks installed at Cheapside

A pair of graduate students have completed a set of stone benches across the road from Jean Nouvel’s One New Change and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Chris Dove and Craig Mitchell, who graduated from Liverpool John Moores University last summer, and won a competition to design a piece of public furniture/sculpture at Cheapside.

Dove said: “Stone Bench consists of ten, hand and machine carved Grove Whitbed, Portland Stone blocks, which continuously increase in size, giving the appearance of the bench growing out of the ground.

“This allows variable seating conditions for people of all ages, creating a new public space for Cheapside, yet allowing the busy public traffic of the area to continue unaffected.”

The pair, who are both studying for part II now, worked with stone masons from the Cathedral Works Organisation on the project.

  • may be pleasant sculptural intervention to be perched on by city workers but uncomfortable & cold as proper seats for anyone else
