Breeam ‘excellent’ visitor centre includes new changing rooms, conference facilities and council office
RH Partnership Architects has unveiled a £3.1 million visitor centre in a Hampshire country park, which provides new conference facilities, council office space and changing facilities for park users.
The Lakeside Centre at Eastleigh features photo-voltaic and solar-thermal panels, a green roof, low-energy lighting and rainwater harvesting, and has achieved a Breeam “excellent” rating.
Delivered in two low-rise parts, the new buildings include a training and conference room for up to 60 people in the main new structure, an office for Eastleigh Borough Council’s countryside staff, office space for partner organisations, and 10 new changing rooms.
RHP said an adjacent building included public toilets that serve the wider park, a vehicle store and workshop for use by council staff, and a range of storage rooms for user-group equipment.
Eastleigh council project manager Angela Taylor said RHP’s scheme was “a stunning example of contextual architecture” that was “wholly sympathetic” to its local environment without compromising on beauty and design.
The structures are part of a £3.1m project to upgrade facilities at the 22ha Lakeside Country Park which features lakes, wet meadow and woodland on the site of a former gravel works between Eastleigh and Southampton.
