Plans for MediaCityUK extension submitted
Carbuncle Cup winner to see additional 500,000sq m of sustainable development
Peel Group has submitted plans for a 10ha extension to the Carbuncle Cup-winning MediaCityUK in Salford.
Outline planning permission is being sought for almost 500,000sq m of development at the MediaCityUK site, which is home to the BBC and was designed by Wilkinson Eyre, Chapman Taylor and Fairhursts.
The first phase of the project was described as “unforgivable” for its urban design failures. “Whatever urban aspiration may be indicated by its name, a city is the last thing one would mistake this development for,” said the Carbuncle Cup judges.
In a statement released to coincide with the planning application, Peel stressed that the same mistakes would not be made again.
“The plans have been devised with regard not only for good urban design principles but also the infrastructure needs of Salford Quays as a whole, including transport and green priorities,” it said.
“The aspiration is to create a sustainable community which meets people’s social, economic and environmental needs, and takes a responsible approach to energy and resource consumption.”
A design statement submitted with the application contains 10 possible layout options. Planning documents contain no reference to an architect but Gillespies has been appointed as landscape consultant and the Bain Wright Partnership is advising on planning.
The proposals are expected to be built in four phases and will include the following:
- Offices – 212,000sq m
- Residential – 95,000sq m
- Hotel – 26,000sq m
- Retail – 8,000sq m
- Leisure – 2,500sq m
- Car parking – 115,000 sq m
