The 180m- high tower is divided in half by a viewing platform

OMA has won a competition to design a new office tower in Shenzhen, China.

It is the second building in the city to be designed by the practice, following the 248m-high Shenzhen Stock Exchange which OMA won through a competition in 2006.

Located in the city’s financial district, the 180m Essence Financial Building is divided in half by a viewing platform that overlooks the Shenzhen Golf Club.

The viewing deck provides shaded outdoor recreational spaces for staff.

The facade of the building has been designed in response to Shenzhen’s climate - the east and west facades are shaded, while the south facade has gradated openings with larger windows at the bottom of the tower.

OMA said: “It is a new typology of office building for Shenzhen, one that meets the conventions of responding to context and users’ needs by breaking away from conventions in office design.”

  • The other entries must have been appalling.

Or maybe their non sequiturs weren't as eye-watering as the statement "...meets the conventions of responding to context and users’ needs by breaking away from conventions in office design.”
