Heritage Alliance chairman angered by consultation timing

Heritage Alliance chairman Loyd Grossman has slammed DCMS over the delayed publication of its consultation paper on the future of English Heritage.

The paper was due to be discussed at the alliance’s annual Heritage Day held last week but was not available because of its delayed publication.

Grossman told the assembled representatives from across the heritage sector that DCMS’s handling of the consultation process had been “shoddy” and “insulting”.

While the paper has since been published, concerns have now been raised about the consultation’s timing because it falls over the Christmas period.

“It’s not an ideal time, especially when it’s such an important issue,” said Grossman, adding that the consultation affects “anyone who has anything to do with listed buildings”.

The government has proposed splitting English Heritage in two, with one body looking after the organisation’s estate and the other taking on a regulatory role.

Under the proposals the estate management function would take on charitable status and be expected to become self-financing within 10 years.

The consultation runs until February 7.

  • 'excepted to be self-financing' ? what if it doesn't ? or will the books be fiddled with 'loans' and 'consultation fees' at full scale of non-projects ?
