Steven Holl and MVVA win St Louis arch competition
A team led by New York architect MVVA and Steven Holl Architects has beaten rival entries including Foster’s to revamp the area surrounding Eero Saarinen’s St Louis Gateway Arch in Missouri, USA.
The winning team proposed a network of fine interventions “incorporating natural science, engineering and design into a holistic philosophy of ecological urbanism” for the public realm project.
Other shortlisted entries for the international competition, run by the US National Parks Service, included a team of Foster & Partners with PWP Landscape Architecture, a team led by US architect Weiss/Manfredi, a team led by German architect Behnisch Architekten and another US-led entry including architect SOM.
The project is scheduled to complete in October 2015 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 192m-high arch – the tallest monument in the United States.
It was designed by Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947.
