Architect designs building for school in Natal with roof built using regional materials

Herzog & de Meuron has drawn up plans for a gymnasium at the School of Dinarte Martiz in Natal, Brazil.

The proposal includes a sequence of new buildings which create a new community centre centred around a sports field. There is seating for 350 people, as well as multipurpose and service rooms.

All of the main elements of the building — the roof, the continuous floor and the single undulating wall — will be constructed with materials and techniques typical of the region.

The project, for Centro Sócio Pastoral Nossa Senhora da Conceição, completes in 2013.

  • Surely that roof isn't serious. Or is it intentionally dropped so low at the edge to actively encourage people to climb onto it - after all it is a gym!
