Project includes revamped facade as well as new interior features

Feix & Merlin has won planning for the refurbishment of the LSE’s 1960 Peacock Theatre.

This means work should start in spring 2015, said director Tarek Merlin. It will be phased so the theatre, which is also used by Sadler’s Wells, only “goes dark” in August.

The project includes a revamped facade as well as internal work to staircases, niches and booth seating and a new colour scheme, lighting and floor and wall finishes.

It will be the first time in 50 years that the theatre, designed by Lewis Solomon Kaye & Partners, has been refurbished.

If ever there was a symbol of an over bureaucratic planning system it is this. Why should they even need planning to convert the material on a potion of an unremarkable facade from what looks Portland stone to black marble?
