Erick van Egeraat has revealed his designs for a 330ha artificial archipelago in the shape of Russia, to be built in the Black Sea near Sochi.

Federation Island, is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. It will consist of seven main islands, over a dozen private islands, and three breakwater islands with sandy beaches, dunes, grasslands, bushes, small forests and riverside. It will contain hotels, cultural, leisure and recreational facilities, beach residences, luxury villas and apartments, dune, river and cliff houses.

The pattern of Russia’s river network is reflected in the island’s waterways, while the country’s mountains are reflected in the island’s relief.

The development will be 15 km from Sochi and the regional Adler airport and near to the cty, marina, airport and skiing resort of Krasnaya Polyana.

Van Egeraat presented the plans to Russian president Vladimir Putin at the International Investment Forum 2007 held in Sochi.

The project is being developed by M-Industries of St Petersburg and designed by Erick van Egeraat in co-operation with Dutch engineering companies Witteveen & Bos and Van Oord Dredging and Marine.

  • Is this a joke? no seriously is this a joke? I know!!! I have an idea I'm going to build an lisland in the North Sea. Iit will feature roads, railways, rivers and runways as well as buildings, lots of buldings. Also we will grow trees and green stuff and plant flowers, nice smelly ones. Then we'll inhabit with a human race. And then we will call it Great Britain!!! Oh that already exists... sorry I was just playing 'God'. This is one of scariest projects I have ever seen!!

  • Wow, I know the Russians are a bit wild (I also have russian blood), but to copy Dubai? Why? To show that they can, too? It is amazing what is happening in Dubai, I mean architecture, all these islands (the "world" etc) - so now we will have it in Russia as well. Cool! The world is crazy!

  • Indonesia had such a project undertaken in the 1970s, and it was met with student protests against the extravagant spending that should have gone to the education system. From wikipedia: Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) or "Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park" (literally translated) is a culture-based recreational area located in East Jakarta, Indonesia. It has an area of about 250 acres. The park is a synopsis of Indonesian culture, with virtually all aspects of daily life in Indonesia's 26 (in 1975) provinces encapsulated in separate pavilions with the collections of architecture, clothing, dances and traditions are all depicted impeccably.

  • sean! you are clueless!!! quit school - its not helping! you tell people to get a life who actually care for it! russia has cared NOT for their elderly, poor, handicapped, soldiers!!! what are you talking about?? paul is so right on! you as a country got to show your strength in per capita income, domestic economic growth, updated educational base, fixed roads, car and airplane production that has been dead for a decade or two. you've got to do it for the ordinary - that's the hope and joy you need to restore. i'm russian and i know russia can do BETTER than this if you know what i mean!

  • RE: Sean Pemble comment Firstly read the comments that follow mine: 1. This project is a blueprint of what is being produced in Dubai. (Anna Frenz) 2. The projects in Dubai are a copy of what was proposed in Indonesia in the 1970's and was met by student protest. (Aoyagi Ritsuka) This project contains no "thinking out the box" as you suggest. In fact I would go as far as to say it doesn't even get out of the 'box'. I have no doubt they can execute a project of this scale, my issue is with the mindset of "starting from scratch"; this scheme has no interaction with the social, political, environmental or economical landscape of Russia or the world. I am suggesting in my comment this is a potentailly a dangerous and thoughtless project for all involved. And finally, I have just as much right as you do to comment on this. So I find your commentary lacking of any content, apart from to attack my viewpoint. I am disappointed in this not only for yourself but for BD online for allowing you to turn this into a personal attack.

  • Wow. Erick's worked himself up to the Pres of Russia. I wonder how much relentless elbow-pushing it took him to execute this? German Grefs' hand is particularly touching! I'm 100% with Paul. This is meaningless and frighteningly vapid. And I frankly, doubt this thing will get realised before 2016. By that time, there'll be different political establishment and Ericks' name will be forgotten. Trust me.

  • Dubai project is in fact a failure. The damage it caused on the environment in the ocean is unbelievable. And also they can not avoid the erosion, the islands are not stable. The maintanence is so high that it will not be possible to afford the project in the end. And again the damage on the nature is huge that no one can take the responsibility so that, this fact is always covered under the sheets. SO, YOU WANNA MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES GO AHEAD. You will end up with a huge project for probably 20 or 30 years and then it will turn into a left over and no coast or sea to enjoy during summer, good luck.

  • When i read the article's title, i thought that the architect might be designing an island in the groups of The World project in the Gulf...but it turned out that Russia also has the same hestiria as in the Gulf, and even with high authorities!...where this joke will stop? can we get little bit more serious?
