Construction starts on New York tower by Foster & Partners
Skyscraper is first residential tower by Foster & Partners in the USA.
Construction is underway on the first residential tower by Foster & Partners in the United States.
50 UN Plaza, developed by Zeckendorf Development with Global Holdings, is a 44-storey luxury apartment building on First Avenue.
The tower, which will sit opposite the UN headquarters, makes references to the New York Art Deco style of nearby buildings by using vertical stacks of bay windows and bands of polished stainless steel on the facade.
The tower’s massing respects the height and scale of its neighbours and is based on three slender volumes that contain 87 units. Most of the apartments will be one to three bedroom suites, with a number of residences that span the full floor area. A spa in the basement incorporates a large exercise pool for residents, while the penthouse apartment features an infinity pool.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
Foster said: “The slender proportion of 50 United Nations Plaza is attenuated by the vertical stacks of bay windows, which give it a distinctive identity. From the apartments within, these bays offer spectacular views of the East River and Manhattan’s skyline.
“The polished stainless steel detailing of the facade is in the spirit of earlier historic towers in the city and it reflects the sharp quality of light which is special to New York. The building has a strong environmental agenda combining measures to reduce energy consumption with the use of recycled materials.”
