Hailed as “exemplar” scheme
Design Council Cabe has backed plans by Fereday Pollard for a new station at Abbey Wood in south-east London.
The plans include a new concourse leading to a forecourt connecting the station with the Harrow Manorway main road. Two new island platforms for Crossrail and North Kent services will also be built.
In its review, Cabe said: “The delivery of the new transport interchange presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to reorganise and regenerate the centre of Abbey Wood.
“We are delighted to see such a positive approach being taken to the architecture, urban realm and community and believe that the project has the potential to be an exemplar of sub-urban regeneration.”
The designs, which have been submitted to both Bexley and Greenwich councils, have been drawn up with the help of urban planners Urban Movement.
The existing station will be demolished and replaced by a temporary station by summer 2014. The new station will open in 2017.
