BDP lands Kuwait cultural centre job
Structure inspired by local ship design
BDP has won a deal to draw up a cultural centre in Kuwait for the country’s Public Authority of Housing Welfare.
The scheme will be built in the middle of the new city of Sabah Al Ahmad and is designed to showcase the historic and contemporary cultural activity of the Gulf state.
Among the inspirations for the design is the dhow, a local sailing ship, while the scheme is topped by a lily-pad roof canopy supported on timber columns, intended to create a forest of tree-like structures within the central oasis garden.
Project director Richard McDowell said: “A key driver for us is the desire to create a new centre with a sense of place – a timeless edifice that acts as a focal point for the new city.”
