BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects

Tom Holbrook said: “This is my Cambridge desk. Think of it as a fecund slum. The desk in the foreground is where I work - it was my father’s, and he made it. It’s pretty rickety, but I like being among his inkstains; let’s say that he was a better poet than he was a carpenter.

“On the back wall of the studio you can see the big map of East Anglia, where we plot our moves. You can just see Emma, our practice administrator on the far right. Out of sight, between my books and the map is 5th Studio’s coffee table, made from a big piece of black glass that was rejected from a project.

“On the left hand side, by the door to the meeting room, is a model of the Venice Arsenale.”

Splendid, I always like a Cambridge desk. Obviously not some kind of nouveau chap who buys his own furniture. And I agree, quite right, a feckless slum, what-ho!

  • Don't get me wrong. I love looking at other architect's workspaces.

But BD could have used the bandwidth and web space to actually critic a newly completed building or something.

Vincent, old bean, you've missed the point. These are desks!!! This is what we got into the profession for [that and book shelves]! What what!

  • I got into it for drawing boards. Desks are for accountants.

    Tally ho eh?

That is your biggest failing. Drawing boards are OK for old fogies like QT/FT, but not in the brave new world of BIM and VE, VEed BIM and BIMed VE. Look to the future, tally-ho!
