BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects

Richard Murphy said: “This is my desk, or most of it. It’s a wonderful mess and I make no apologies for that. In fact I’m always extremely suspicious of people who have a tidy desk!! My long suffering administrator has a blitz on it from time to time. That’s Hiccup the office dog on the right. Actually she’s owned by Brian in the office, but comes to work every day. She’s taken to having her afternoon nap on my coat. There’s a score for a Beethoven Mass that I am rehearsing with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus at the moment. Other than that it’s just stuff. Actually out of camera on the left is a bit I use for drawing; yes I do still draw!”

It is great to catch a glimpse into one of Richard Murphy's most intimate spaces. Murphy is one of Britain's foremost designers and thus worthy of close examination and a thourough exposé. For all that I am in awe of his immense talents, I am worried that of late, his relationship with Brian's dog may be distracting him from his dialogue with Carlo Scarpa's architectural language, and, furthermore, that his mentor Isi Metzstein's sad death may weaken his critical resolve.

At first glance, I thought wig, and now I read dog. Hard to tell sometimes, just hope it's house trained. Anyway, that old chap Murphy seems to be the all-singing, all-dancing architect of the Scottish Enlightenment. Splendid show! I salute you sir!

  • He has trained that Brian the dog to use CAD, hasn't he? That's why the papers are everywhere - it's because the dog can't reach the desk without walking on the desk and moving things around. I used to think CAD monkeys were the way forward in my office. Now this guy up in Scotland has a CAD dog. It is only time before these clever Scots start to genetically engineer a clonable Dolly-the-BIM-haggis to use Revit.
