BD takes a look at the workspaces of architects

Jestico & Whiles director Heinz Richardson said: “This is my desk. It is real and not posed, has no architectural pretentions but bits of my daily life scattered around – cigarette papers, coffee cup, a King Hokum CD and a calculator that I’ve had for ages (design classic though).

“The model is one I made a while ago of a Zero Energy office building we designed in Accrington, It never saw the light of day because of local politics but I hang on to it because I like it and we invested a lot of time in the project. When I draw I tend to just push everything out of the way or find somewhere else in the office to sit. Should have left a moody pencil sketch in shot to show I’m a real architect…oh well you’ll just have to believe me”.

  • As everyone's is more like .........

The only option being the cigarette papers?

My gosh, this is dreadfully and astonishingly boring. Who came up with this idea? Head of Creative Reporting? Who has and who doesn't have those little holes in their socks would have been far more interesting surely.

A good desk. I can relate to this desk minus the cigarette papers and calculator. Yes Heinz Richardson, you 'should have left a moody pencil sketch in shot'. Sadly, although boring, this is what most architects' desks look like, when we would all rather have desks like Steven Holl's.

    Unpretencious? What's with the cap?

come on juicemajor, of course it's staged as much as the other ones...but you must agree that the end result is pleasant and believable...

  • I can confirm that the cap is there normally. And the travelcards; they are real travelcards. But the phone is staged. It's usually a little bit further to the left.

This whole thing about the architects desks and especially the pics, give the subject a monotone, lifeless and mind bendingly boring expression.

What is the 9-5 day like for the architect?

Splendid show, Richardson, but the cap is perhaps not cricket. Hommage to William Hague?

You missed a trick with the monitor. Surley it was crying out to present us with a decent architectural image.
