Aecom launches global sports group
Announcement coincides with first image of Rio Olympics masterplan
Aecom has formed a specialist global sports group to build on its Olympic successes.
The practice, which masterplanned the London Olympics, has scooped the same role for the 2016 Rio Games, beating 59 teams from 18 countries.
The first image of the Brazilian scheme was released this week, coinciding with the launch of Aecom’s worldwide sports group.
It will include architects, urban designers, landscape architects, economists, planners, engineers and many other professionals based in Aecom’s offices on several continents.
Aecom is working with Wilkinson Eyre on the Rio project, which was Brazil’s first international architecture competition. The team also includes Rio-based DG Architecture, Spanish practice Pujol Barcelona Architects, event organiser IMG Sports and London-based engineer Expedition.
As well as a global stage for the 2016 games, the team is designing a legacy district with new homes, jobs and places for leisure activities including a waterfront park.
Jason Prior, chief executive of Aecom’s planning design & development group, said: “A key element of the win for Aecom was our ability to use the same project team that worked on London’s Olympic park and its legacy plans.”
