Willmott Dixon releases time lapse following construction of an Atkins-designed standardised school

Willmott Dixon and public sector construction specialists Scape claim that their standardised approach - called ‘Sunesis’ - has saved Warwickshire County Council at least 30% on the new Oakfield Primary Shcool building in Rugby.

The school was delivered in just 32 weeks.

It's a big boring shed with some green tat that they couldn't even be bothered to build.

  • But will this type of shcool improve education?

  • It looks like they created a hangar and filled the spaces. There has been a load of exemplar school designs from the Dfes and I reckon this one is noisy in the main hangar space. The class rooms seem difficult to reconfigure and at break time the tables and chairs in the main space must make circulation difficult. The building being one main space with computers and equipment and changing loading levels of people must get very hot and cold as it fills and empties.

    Basically the design is flawed.

  • Also, aren't younger children and older children not suppose to mix at breaks and this seems a free for all ripe for bullying etc. Hopefully someone from the DFES will comment more succinctly than I can.

  • Also, as a last comment why are the government celebrating this. it is a sad day for the UK when our children are house in buildings from industrial estates.

Battery education, and you can hire someone for minimum wage unless you want the free range variety, the type with hope, dreams, aspirations! Makes me weep.

  • You're onto a loser, lads.

How many of these can you build for the budget of a crapulous Evelyn Grace Academy? It may not be perfect, but if it gets children out of seriously sub-standard accommodation into a relatively modern teaching environment, it is not reasonable to argue that they should wait until the budget is flush enough to afford something (allegedly) better designed.

  • Gentlemen, if you can design a better school for almost half the price of a 'normally' procured one, that has large classrooms, flexible break out spaces, good acoustics, an EPC rating of A, and is endorsed by Design Council CABE and its educationalist advisors (and delivered in half the usual time it takes to procure a school) I will bow to your talent. Until then, get your heads out of the unaffordable clouds and stop bitchin'.

  • The point being I could or any other Architect could build this building but we would not because we care about the students and are responsible.

It would cost exactly the same as well ...the cost of an industrial shed and save 30% and be the most straight forward project so I could be on the golf course more often. Wrong headed!

  • Philip Watson, the justification of listing out merits shows that all these things are unfortunately irrelevant if they result in "soup kitchen architecture",meaning it gives a basic form of sustenance , bland and soulless. I would argue the main goal has been lost and all the minor accomplishments have been posed as making up for this loss.

Everyone will discover to their dismay when this tide of blandness can no longer rely on the vestiges of past inspiration and our environment is so degraded that innovation within it is impossible.

This is building truly reflecting our culturally impoverished times.
