Innovative designs by Brunel University’s highly rated Product and Industrial Design course students are to be showcased at The ARC Show 2012

The students are finalists in The ARC Show’s LED Architectural Lighting Challenge sponsored by Remote Controlled Lighting Ltd (RCL). The brief challenged over 100 second year students to create an LED architectural light fitting, innovative in the lighting effect, operation, mounting or in the way it fits into its surroundings. Only commercially viable designs have been shortlisted, those with an efficient, functional light output and a realistic manufacturing process.

The winner will be announced at The ARC Show by a team of leading lighting innovators. Joe Rushton from RCL said “It is wonderful to see the creative energy that is produced from Brunel. The reason we sponsor this competition is to help shape the next generation of talent to design beautiful products that are sensitive to the constraints and challenges of business.”

From a student perspective, presenting at The ARC Show provides a real forum to exhibit concepts and receive expert reviews from industry. Last year’s winning student, Kat Harris is now working for Maya Lighting in China for her industrial placement year. Her experience of participating in this competition and exhibiting at The ARC Show helped fuel her interest in lighting design and innovation.

Reflecting on her experience from last year she stated that “Exhibiting at The ARC Show in London was a fantastic experience, it was a valuable insight into the work that goes into an exhibition and the opportunities that can arise from it. As well as gaining advice from renowned lighting experts, The ARC Show also offered a unique chance to talk to businessmen and women in many industries about our work. I thoroughly enjoyed the Lighting Exhibition and the chance to present my own work for the first time.”

Andrew Vaughan, Brand Director for The ARC Show, noted: “Supporting the designers of tomorrow is so important, so competitions like this are vital. As a platform for showcasing the future of lighting design, The ARC Show is unrivalled, so we’re thrilled to welcome the competition to the show and look forward to discovering the innovative products the students have designed and encouraging the next generation of designers.”
