Ash Sakula’s competition is a great opportunity for an emerging practice

Ellis Woodman

Ellis Woodman- Executive Editor

Backers of the “Meanwhile” projects staged on vacant land in Newham, have not enjoyed an easy ride.

The operator of the London Pleasure Gardens is now in administration, while Fluid Architects’ Industri[us] was forced to close last month after the large visitor numbers predicted during the Olympics failed to materialise, blowing a hole in its business plan.

The Canning Town Caranvanserai is the one project that is still a going concern. While it has struggled for commercial sponsorship, it certainly doesn’t want for passionate and tenacious backers in the form of Ash Sakula Architects. The practice’s latest initiative is a competition that asks architects and engineers to design a structure for the Caravanserai site entirely out of reclaimed materials.

A project of enormous relevance to our present environmental and economic situation, it is also a fantastic opportunity for an emerging practice. BD is delighted to serve as media sponsor and looks forward to presenting the submissions in the new year.
