Have your say on this year’s shortlist

From the nominator: “This horrifically misconceived cruise-liner of a development has docked on Oxford Street and is presently nearing completion. It is simply a graceless, sparkling slug of commercial ‘bling’ which does absolutely nothing for it’s surroundings. The building design handles the site and context very awkwardly, whilst the execution demonstrates the pointlessness of it’s nasty, patterned envelope. One of the worst of the pre-bust design glut.”

“Truly horrible!”

  • The plastic 'floral' decoration panels that clad the exterior are pretty awful too.

I don't know if there is a good way for a building to respond when it's context is Oxford Street aka hell on earth but there you go.

Some nice entries this year but we all know they must inevitably bow one and all to the daddy - roll on the Orbit!

  • Yes, this is surely the most horrible, vulgar, anti-urban, inhuman, idiotic thing that has been built for years. How on earth did the planners permit Oxford Street, and the hinterland of this building towards Grosvenor Square, to be wrecked with this awful disaster of failed first-year architecture student stupidity?

  • Oh wait- I think I know how the planners permitted it.

  • BTW it's "does absolutely nothing for its surroundings". Not "it's" but "its".

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe RP was involved with the designs for the Strata Tower (the 2010 winner) while he was at Hamiltons (now BFLS), so he has some form in this competition.

  • Good lord, this is actually built!?! Where is the precedent for its vastness?! Yikes. Good entry.

  • reminds me of one of those big fat sea lions at Pier 39 just sitting there, bloated, unable to move, groaning, passing wind.

    Just what London needs.
